What is an Acolyte

What is an Acolyte?

An acolyte is a boy or girl who follows Jesus Christ as Lord and who, in service to Christ, assists the minister during the time of worship.

What does the word Acolyte mean?

The word acolyte comes from the Greek word Akolouth. When you change the Greek letters into English letters, it comes out like this:

AK O LOU THOS

Ac o lyte

The word means follower, attendant, keeper, or helper.

The Communion Table

The cross on the table reminds us that Jesus died on a cross but has been raised from the dead and is with us here and now.

Candles are used to represent Jesus, “the light of the world”. The white candles on either side of the cross represent the two-fold nature of Christ: His human and divine nature—Son of God and Son of man.

Since ancient times, light and fire have reminded people that God is here with us. When you bring the light into the sanctuary, and when you light the candles, you are carrying in the light of Christ. You are a visible symbol of the presence of Christ for the worshippers and should act in a worshipful respectful manner.

If there is a problem, don’t panic. The worship facilitator or another adult will help you if necessary.

Before the Service:

  1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the service will start.
  2. Have your hair combed and hands and fingernails clean. Wear clean clothing and shoes. Do not chew gum.
  3. Check the candlelighter to make sure that there is enough taper.

Carrying in the Light of Christ

  1. Hold the candlelighter with your right hand near the bottom and your left hand on or near the knob which regulates the length of the taper.
  2. Hold the candlelighter in front of you, tipped slightly forward, with the flame pointing ahead of you, and pointing upward
  3. Walk in a dignified, unhurried manner. Keep your head up and eyes straight ahead as much as possible.
  4. Light the candle to the right of the cross first and then to the left.
  5. Extinguish the candlelighter flame by sliding the taper
  6. Exit the sanctuary

Carrying the Light of Christ into the world

  1. Light your taper, then extinguish your candle with the bell.
  2. If there are other candles at the table, extinguish them also.
  3. Carefully, carry the candlelighter out of the sanctuary and then extinguish the flame by sliding in the taper
