ADOPT-A-FAMILY 101

Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners’ Adopt-A-Family Program has been a holiday tradition in the community since 1980.

Each year, IOCP families register to be linked with individual and group sponsors, who agree to anonymously provide gifts for each listed family member. Linking begins at the end of October. IOCP provides sponsors with the needs/wants list generated by registered families to facilitate donor shopping.

Sponsors commit to a $50 per person spending guideline. They have the option of providing stockings for the youngsters in the sponsored family.

Sponsors wrap and tag each gift with the first name of the recipient and sign only their own first name on the tag to ensure confidentiality.

It is strongly recommended that a “LETTER TO THE PARENTS” from sponsors containing gift receipts be included with the gifts. Frequently gifts are not returnable or exchangeable because there’s no gift receipt. Wrapped gifts are then placed in sturdy plastic bags with a clearly printed copy of the family number taped securely to the outside of the bag (“FAM # ___ 1 of 3”, “2 of 3”, “3 of 3”) and a copy placed inside the bag to prevent confusion during the gift organization stage.

Sponsors deliver the gift bags to Redeemer Lutheran Church, our host site, on the Friday, Dec. 11, 3:30-9pm, or Saturday, Dec. 12, 8am – 1pm. Volunteers are staffed during these hours only. Redeemer Lutheran Church is unable to accept gift delivery on behalf of IOCP.

Please know: it is critical for there to be equity in gift-giving among family members. Contact Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners as early as possible if unable to fulfil the sponsorship commitment. For groups sponsoring families through additional organizations, great care must be give to ensure that the gift bags being delivered to Redeemer Lutheran Church for IOCP families contain only the gifts intended for the IOCP program and that all gifts for all family members being sponsored through IOCP are accounted for in the bags. This prevents confusion during the gift organization process.
